6378 - 2000 "Old World Globe" lidded stein. This 8 1/4" lidded stein was made in Germany by the Westerwald Team (W-W Team). The full-figural 3 dimensional stein was created with explorers, travelers, historians and dreamers of all ages in mind. A globe bearing a map of the earth is the main subject. It is "mounted" on an axis which is graduated with various incised latitude lines. The inspiration for this specific globe was one made in Nuernberg in 1492, by Martin Behaim, who almost undoubtedly influenced Christopher Columbus to sail west to the Orient. Gloves have been used to represent the surface of the Earth since at least 150 B.C., a time when ancient Greeks already knew that the earth was sphere shaped. Since travel is closely related to time, various recording and measuring instruments are depicted underneath this globe: a telescope, a feather pen, a pocket watch with a real metal chain, spectacles, charts, wax seals, books, etc. The handle is in the shape of a world atlas book. A new feature from Westerwald Team, revealed for the first time on this stein on the lower left, is a wax seal with brass medallion, in which the factory proudly states that the product is entirely "Made in Germany". The globe itself is subtly separated by a concealed pewter lid. The top of the axis on the globe serves as the thumblift for the stein. Individually numbered. Generic box.
